Last Meeting

Because of a mix up in reporting on the last meeting, I am doing this from memory and my memory is quite poor.

Outreach Chair Bill Henzel would like to continue the very successful Toy Making Workshops. If someone would like to host a workshop in their shop in the next few months, please let Bill know. He can be reached at 650/349-3062 or by e-mail at wjh@gene.com.

Yeung Chen made a presentation for our Tech Talk. He explained how one can cut metal sheets on a radial arm saw. One has to take extremely small cuts on both sides of the sheet. He strongly advised never to use a table saw since the metals pieces can get into the bearings of the motor and destroy it.

Main presentation

Steve Smith of Smith & Co started out in the electronic business. He got interested in Government Surplus and bought epoxies and glue at extremely low prices. He found that there was a demand for this and quickly sold what he had. Then people started asking for specific materials primarily for boats. He delved into this and was successful in developing materials to help the boat people. He got more and more into this and it soon became full time.

The company has a complete line of products such as restoring deteriorated wood, a clear penetrating epoxy sealer, a "Fill-It" epoxy sealer and various bonding products. A sub-heading for his company is Industrial and Marine Synthetic Resins and Specialties. He also has The Lignu Technology Institute of Wood Restoration at www.lignu.com and www.woodrestoration.com.

Steve is an extremely knowledgeable person and his enthusiasm is infectious. He covered a whiteboard several times over with drawings and charts. He had a wonderful multi-page hand out describing some of the restoration and bonding products. His company is located in Richmond and he is more than willing to discuss a problem with you. The company is located at 5100 Channel Avenue, Richmond, CA 94804. Other ways to contact him is by e-mail at

Smi3th@smithandcompany.org. A web site is www.rotdoctor.com

We want to thank Steve for a wonderful presentation.
