BAWA Gears Up for October Woodworking Show

Every year over the last weekend in October (10/28-30), BAWA members staff a booth at the Woodworking Show staged at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds. In return for working a two-hour shift, BAWA members receive free admission to the show.

The show brings the latest equipment and techniques to avid woodworkers, often at a discount. It also has on-going free demonstrations and classes (some paid).

This show brings in a lot of new members to the club, so we try to make our booth worth visiting. This year we have three booths. We will have some large items on display, as well as small items in our locked display case, but what really pulls in people are demonstrations of any kind.

Arnie Champagne has done a fantastic job in the past of manning the booth and demonstrating techniques all three days.

Last year, John Schmidt delighted the crowds by making pens on his small lathe, but he is unable to join us this year. We need volunteers to demonstrate anything for any amount of time (doesn't need to be all three days). Even the simplest demonstration pulls viewers to the booth--sanding toy parts, sharpening a cabinet scraper, etc.

At our September kick-off dinner, we filled almost all the slots for working the booth, but there are two opportunities:

1. We need someone on Sunday from 2-4 pm.

2. We also need one or two more people to help take down the show on Sunday from 4-6 pm.

You do not have to be an experienced woodworker to work in the booth. A pulse and a smile is enough. And remember, you get into the show for free if you work in the booth (you have to pay for parking).

If you want to be on the waiting list to work, in case anybody cancels, please email Robbie Fanning at rfanning@mac.com, (650)323-1183

Errata

In last month's newsletter in the LAST MONTH'S MEETING column, this confused reporter listed Craig Colvin as Frank Colvin. What a way to treat our host of our August meeting and who bought a brand new TV/DVD in time for our meeting. We also have an open ended invitation to meet in his Sawdust Shop any time. Sorry about that Craig.
