President's Corner

Wow, where'd the time go?!

So where was my column last month?? I have an excuse. We were in the process of moving and with the computers down, etc. I just couldn't manage to produce it. Yes, my wife and I moved, lock, stock, barre...and shop. We now live up in the Sierra Foothills, and as a result I may now be driving the furthest of any member to our meetings. I moved the shop stuff last. Moving the 700 lb. cabinet saw gave me some anxious moments. I loaded it and everything else on my utility trailer and made multiple trips. Whew -- glad that's over with! The equipment is all stacked in my new (smaller) garage, along with a hundred or so boxes, awaiting the construction of a new shop next to the house. Outside, beyond the garage it looks like someone from the Grapes of Wrath has set up business here. Not everything fit into the house. So now what am I gonna' do with this load of hardwood that's still on my trailer sitting in the driveway?

Have any of you built a shop from scratch? If so I'd like to hear from you so I can learn what others have done. You know such issues as concrete floor or wood, 9' high walls or 10', etc. have to be solved.

I've had so much fun at our meetings this year I can't believe we've had 6 of them already. Each has been very different and very interesting. Now be sure to sign up at the August meeting for our September Party. Details are elsewhere in this newsletter.

Kudos to Ron Slayen!!

It was casually mentioned at a previous meeting that a non-profit foundation run by our secretary Ron Slayen has generously agreed to donate money for the construction of a display case for our booth at this year's woodworking show. What a guy! Thanks Ron! Don Naples, Tony Fanning and I are busy designing the case now and we'll get it built in time for the show. If you want to help, let us know. It's a fun project. When it's set up in our booth at the show, attendees will be able to see representative samples our member's work, and the pieces will be protected.
