I hope some of you had time to go to the State Fair in Sacramento last month. In addition to all the woodworking that is normally there, they had a separate building titled the Spirit of Wood. This was organized by Mets Lerwill, a woodturner in the Nor-Cal Woodturning Club. Though Mets is a turner, the show encompassed all fields of woodworking. There was work there from some of the top woodturners and woodworkers in the world. There were also continuing and changing demonstrations going on every day. The walls were decorated with some of most beautiful slabs of native California woods I've seen. The center of the building was set up for the demonstrations with small shops. I was there one day with my peddle powered scroll saw (it was the saw they wanted). On that same day there were people turning, carving, tole painting and cutting. It was quite a popular building. The reaction by the visitors was excellent and hopefully this can become a regular part of the fair. The Del Monte County Fair already has such a display every year and it is visited by gallery owners from around the state. I wanted to go there but couldn't make it this year. While most of the fairs have some woodworking, these two are exceptional and you should make it a point to visit them next year-or better yet, enter something in your county fair.
