Sunday December 8th 6pm: Annual Holiday Party and Ornament Challenge
Featured Speaker: Blake Weber
Blake is a professional firefighter who set up a workshop in his single car garage.
and has been creating construction videos of his work and posting them on YouTube.
He has 214,000 subscribers and over 13 million views on his YouTube channel
He strives to create unique pieces that often require unusual construction methods.
Sometimes might create a duplicate piece, sell one and keep the other.
Black does not stain or dye his wood, preferring to use different species that have different colors.
Examples of Blake's work
Rainbow Cabinet
I set out to build something unique that would challenge me on a technical level,
as well as showcase the incredible variety of wood colors that nature can provide.
But this project took on an unexpected deep personal meaning for myself and my family as I was building it
Sunrise Hall Table
This hall table with cabinet is the second in my current series of "Mountainscape" furniture.
I don't get to spend nearly as much time in the mountains as I'd like to these days,
so I feel the need to surround myself with imagery from my favorite places
Black Diamond Humidifier
I've had the idea to create a bold, 3-dimensional, geometric pattern.
"Due to the visual complexity of this design,
I decided to use a wood that was dark and dramatic
lending itself to become a striking humidor"

Bent Wood Bar Cart
This project was built for the rocklerbentwoodchallenge contest on Instagram.
Every piece of wood in this project is bent.
The maple legs were cold-bent-laminated over an MDF form.
He spoke about cold bent lamination.
First he will design a piece in Sketchup or by hand on paper,
then he will cut out paper templates.
He will use MDF to make forms for the bent laminations.
He tends to cut 1/16" - 1/8" thick strips for the laminations. Thinner strips are required for tighter curves.
A thin kerf tablesaw blade will save a lot of wood when cutting strips for bending.
Blake uses Titebond II for all his gluing needs.
He stressed the importance of using plenty of glue, as apposed to insufficient glue.
Packing tape is applied to wood and form surfaces to keep glue off areas where it is not wanted.
He has found that creep is not a problem over time.
He has a laser cutter that he has used to cut pieces for marquetry.
He used to have a CNC router, but decided it was too noisy and one little error in programming could lead to disaster.
For wide gentle curved surfaces like door panels, he will use flexible plywood for forms and will vacuum bag the laminations.
Blake brought in one of his "Leaf Boxes" for us to look at.
Laura brought in two hand cut marquetry boxes she made.
One was based on a family photo from a location in New York.
She brought in the small plow plane her husband bought for her
Atsushi Nakai
Atsushi brought in old Japanese chisels, a marking gauge, and a hand plane that he uses.
He has taken classes in Japanese wood working.
He showed us the small apricot slab he cut and finished.
