President's Message

It has been a busy year for BAWA. We have had many interesting presentations from both guests and our members including:

2 Kumiko inspired designs: a wine cabinet and Kumiko screens, a standing desk, a queen sized platform bed, Krenov style cabinet (including the use of CAD to capture the design), a small bow fronted chest of drawers and high end wine boxes

We also had a presentation by Yeung Chan on the building of his 1800's design row boat/h4>

We had demonstrations of wood chip carving

In June we had the return of our 2 x 4 Challenge

Bruce hosted a 2 day hands-on marquetry class and we had a hand-cut dovetail class in the Palo Alto Adult School

Visits included a trip to Robert Beauchamp's Walnut Store, an incredible place stacked solid with slabs of Walnut trees, mostly harvested in California.

Plus many Show and Tells and a number of Silent Auctions.

In September we had our 3rd Summer Picnic in Belmont where we had our first ever planing challenge.

November saw the return of our refreshment break which gives attendees time to discuss their work and their problems while they are at the meeting.

Seasons Greetings
and a Happy New Year

Cheers

BAWA Hybrid Zoom Meeting December 10th. 2023

(We had a very nice pot luck dinner before the meeting began)

Program Announcements – Paul Krenitsky

Paul announced that Aaron will be the speaker in January and he will discuss Nakashima chairs.
He also suggested we have a name tag contest for 2024 and a question and answer period at the end of the meeting.

Jon Kaplan reminded us that the $60 annual dues are due. You can pay on-line or send him a check.

Toy Workshop

Toys from 2018 Toy Workshop

Frank told us that Harry Filer is no longer able to run the Toy Workshop, so we are looking for a volunteer to take over that job.

The toy workshop involves getting a group together to build wooden toys that will be donated to needy children during the holidays. In the past, volunteers pre-cut the parts and we would meet at Jamie Buxton's, or some other workshop, to assemble the toys.

BAWA Woodworking Show

Pictures from 2018 Woodworking Show

Laura Rhodes volunteered during the meeting to organize our Woodworking Show (WoodCraft store in San Carlos?)

Frank will guide you in the process. In past years, Jamie took photos of participant's entries.

Aaron said he would be glad to take photos if participants can bring their projects to his house in Burlingame.

(We had more very nice pot luck dinner before our Featured Speaker)

Featured Speaker
Lloyd Worthington Levy.

Krenov style cabinet

Lloyd showed slides of the Krenov style cabinet on stand that he designed and built.

He by began sketching on his tablet. He used the Morpholio app on his tablet, along with a stylus, to sketch over an imported photo of the cabinet he found on the internet.

Then he moved on to Fusion 360 to create the detailed design complete with dimensions of all the parts.

Lloyd chose Maple for the cabinet and Sapele for the base and legs. Figured Maple was used for the doors.

3D printed jigs

3D printed drilling jigs were made for the dowels used to hold the shelf and base to the side frames.

The doors have the Figured Maple veneer vacuum bagged using Unibond One.

Lloyd selected knife hinges to hold the doors in place.

He created 3D printed router templates for the hinges on his Prusa MK3 3D printer.

He used PETG carbon fiber reinforced filament to create the drilling jigs and templates.

Dominoes are used to hold the legs to the carcass.

For finishing he used General Finishes water based urethane applied with a foam brush and wiped off right away.
Three coats then a final finish included a wax based product.

The cabinet including the stand is 60" tall, 20" wide and 14" deep.

Lloyd mentioned that he got some of the wood from Cali Hardwood in Milpitas.

It is finished with Odie's Oil finish.

It has a Walnut frame with Cherry panels and a Cedar interior base.

Three coats did the trick, then it was waxed
