Our Rafflemeister Stan Booker has 4 Walnut boards in the raffle. Walnut seems to be a very popular wood for woodworkers. Here is a little description of the wood.

Walnut is of medium density and is tough and hard. It has moderate bending and crushing strengths. Stiffness is low. It has good steam bending characteristics. The wood can be worked with hand and power tools without difficulty. There is a moderate blunting effect on cutters. Takes nails and screws well. Glues satisfactorily. Finishes to a high polish.

A very durable wood. The sapwood is susceptible to attack by the powder post beetle. Heartwood is resistant to preservatives.

The wood is used for gun stocks, high-quality furniture, cabinetmaking, boatbuilding, musical instruments, clock cases, turning and carving. It is also used for paneling and veneers.

The wood can also be found in burls, crotches and burrs.
