There will be no Tech Talk at our January meeting. We will start with the election of a Secretary. Our own Don Naples will make this evening's presentation and Michelle Nunes, his company General Manager, plans to attend too.
His presentation will be about methods of sharpening planes, chisels, and knives. This will include the use of oil stones, water stones, silicon carbide, grinders, and a machine he developed, the Lap-Sharp LS-200, which performs the sharpening task faster and better than any method known to him. He will also show a number of styles of planes and chisels, and will include information of types of steel used in blades and which are best. Some special planes dating back to the 1860's will be shown, with comments about what to look for when purchasing collector and user planes. He will show the current style of Stanley and Record planes, and show which are superior.
This is a must see presentation and you should leave with a better understanding of how to improve your planes to make them more useful, learn the differences in types of steel available for cutting tools and which are best, some tips in what to look for in used tools, and see some nice infill planes including a Spiers of Ayr dovetailed steel panel plane, several Mathieson of Glasgow, Scotland planes, and a Norris plane with their patented adjuster. He will also provide a few sources for these types of tools. After the presentation, a small assortment of specialty tools for woodworkers will be available for demonstration and sale, including the Lap-Sharp, LS-200 sharpening system. He will explain the benefits of each tool and why they were developed for woodworkers.
