Shop tour |
On November 6th, a number of woodworkers assembled at Bruce Bell's shop in San Francisco. Bruce's shop is the garage area of a typical San Francisco 25-foot wide home. But into this space he has organized a very complete shop. We saw a chop saw, table saw, 2 planers, a band saw, a jointer, mini-lathe and many other tools and a multitude of small tools. Everything is organized into drawers and cabinets. Bruce was working on a stool. Rather than use screws, he uses Miller dowels. These are stepped dowels which are much faster than screws to install and don't need to be plugged. They come in several different types of wood and are a bit pricey but he saves time using them. He used old growth Redwood for these stools which he had bought at a very reasonable price. He uses other woods as well such as Western Red Cedar, Teak, Mahogany, Meranti and Cypress. He sells these stools at craft and flea markets or on order. He also showed us a large number of wine racks that he is building for a winery. Also stave construction planter boxes. As we munched on donuts, bagels with our coffee served to us by his partner Teresa Maloney, we toured the back of the shop and backyard where there were a number of different types of chairs, chaises and cabinets which Bruce has built. He builds mostly outdoor furniture. He has a web site www.doubledragonwoodworks.com A very satisfying tour and a big thank you to Bruce.
