Sad News

We have lost a valued member of our club. Don Stern, our Treasurer, was felled by a heart attack on January 21, 2002. Don, an active woodworker, had worked on his own houses over the years. When he retired a few years ago, he started taking classes in woodworking and doing even more in his shop. For example he had just started to rebuild a fence and storage shed at his house, using some of the joints he had just learned in Jay van Arsdale's Japanese Woodworking class at Laney College. At a recent meeting he showed us pictures of a wall cabinet he built for his dining room. It had to match a buffet below that he'd purchased years ago. He experimented with the finish until he got it to match exactly.

Don was also active in "Rebuilding Together." Last year he worked on a house in Berkeley with some of our other members building a ramp and railing which allowed the homeowners to have access to their garden. This year Don had already started estimating another project in Berkeley for Rebuilding Together.

As a long standing, supportive BAWA member, he was starting his second term as our treasurer. All of us at BAWA will miss Don very much.

There will be a memorial service on February 22nd between 2 and 4 pm at Northbrae Community Church, 941 The Alameda, Berkeley. Donations can be made to Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April) 3318 Adeline St., Berkeley CA 94703.
