West Meets East 1: Office Side Table

Wood: Madrone Veneers and Solid Cherry

Finish: Oil and urethane.

Size: 54in wide x 22in deep x 29in high

Technique: Mortise and tenon joints, madrone veneer on top, solid cherry base.

Inspiration: "The cherry cabinet, featuring dovetailed sides, floats on splined rails, free of the cabinet legs, creating a sense of lightness. The top, door fronts and the back panel are book-matched veneers of California madrone heartwood."

Wood: Madrone Veneers and Solid Cherry Case

Finish: Oil and urethane.

Size: 44" W by 24" D by 24"H

Technique: Mortise and tenon joints, dovetailed casework, supported on splined top and bottom rails.

Inspiration:
Dramatic book matched madrone door panels and top. The legs are free of the case sides and attached to the rails.

Wood: Casework is dovetailed solid cherry, the top is solid madrone, the drawer and door panels have fronts of ¼” madrone laminated to a cherry core.

Finish: Oil and urethane.

Size: 37in wide x 24in deep x 23in high

Torii Gate

Wood: Clear heart redwood

Finish: Outdoor Oil

Size: 12' high

Technique: I built this with considerable help and great encouragement from Fred Reicher. We built it and put it up together. Foundation of rebar reinforced concrete, 4” galvanized steel pipe inside the columns. Arch is bent laminations.

Inspiration:
"An entry gate for a Japanese style home in the hills of Cupertino"

Inspiration:
"The influence of Japanese architecture is evident in the design. It was inspired by my design of a Torii Gate I had made a few years before. "



Spalted Willow Jewelry Box

Wood: Spalted willow & Claro Walnut top

Finish: Shellac and urethane

Technique: Locking mitre joints, corners book matched grain pattern

Inspiration:
"It’s a shame to waste good wood. It came from a tree cut down in my front yard."

Dining Bench



This piece won First Prize in the Chair category in the 2018 BAWA Exhibition

Wood: Black Acacia

Technique: Mortise and Tenon, Butterfly insert

Finish: Sutherland Welles Botanical Polymerized Tung Oil

Inspiration:
This bench and its mate complement a dining room table made using the same technique and design features. Each leg is made of four interlocking pieces, joined in the center with tenons and dowels. The trestle connects the leg sets, held in place with ebony pegs.

Wood: Quilted quartersawn hard maple, Bird’s Eye Maple and Bubinga base

Technique: Mortise and tenon, dovetailed base rails into footplate

Finish: Water based clear catalyzed lacquer

"Left over maple from the dining room table. I wanted a light, airy feeling."

Technique: Lock miter joints, Divided trays

Finish: Shellac and urethane

One box was a gift to the Brazilian parents of my son’s girlfriend. I wanted to show them that there are beautiful woods in North America too.

I made this bookcase several years ago right after I first joined BAWA. It has served me well.



All Western: The Standup Desk

This piece won the People's Choice Award in the 2014 BAWA Exhibition

Technique: Mortise and tenon, dovetailed casework and drawers.

Finish: Oil and urethane

Inspiration: Standing restores ones blood circulation and mobility. Gets me off my butt, too.



Entertainment Cabinet with Turntable

Size: 16in by 20in by 60in high

Wood: Douglas fir base, red cedar drawer assembly, redwood upper case

Technique: Krenov style angled front cabinet, mortise and tenon for legs, dovetailed angled drawer

Finish: Oil and urethane

Inspiration: Based upon the design of my display table.

Technique: Mortise and tenons for legs, dovetailed drawer

Inspiration: An experiment using softwoods. I wanted a floating drawer to lighten the look of the table.



Window Bench / Chest

Size: 16in by 20in by 60in high

Wood: Black Acacia

Technique: Mortise & Tenon, floating, book matched panels, brass hinges on the lid

Finish: Shellac sealer, Urethane finish coats

Inspiration: My golf buddy’s wife wanted a window bench to admire the outside views. The acacia slab came from Jackel enterprises in Watsonville.



Kitchen for an Additional Dwelling Unit (ADU)

Size: 18" D x 24" W x 36" H

Wood: Macacauba exterior, maple plywood boxes

Finish: Shellac sealer, three coats of Urethan

Technique: European style cabinets with book matching grain along the full length.

Inspiration: This is an ADU constructed on my son’s property in Santa Cruz. I made the kitchen cabinets and all the doors for the house.
