This Month's Meeting

October 17th (3nd Thursday)

7:00 pm

November Show

We have had a number of people volunteer and to them a BIG THANK YOU. But we need more people to make this a success. Remember that this is how we get new people into the club with new ideas and keeps our club humming.

So, here are the slots that are still open at this writing. Contact Robbie Fanning at RFanning@mac.com or at 650/323-1183.

  • Friday, 11/1, 12-2 PM, 1 person;
  • Saturday, 11/2, 2-4PM, 2 people;
  • 4-6 PM, 2 people;
  • Sunday, 11/3, 2-4 PM, 1 person
  • Plus a few more volunteers to tear down on Sunday.

While in the booth, we found that even the simplest demonstration pulls viewers to the booth. One year, Tony Fanning sharpened his cabinet scraper, while sidewalk supervisors told him how he was doing it wrong.

This year we have even more planned for our booth.

  • Craig Mineweaser, Don Naples, and Tony Fanning have designed a 5'-high display cabinet with shelves to display smaller items.
  • Bill Henzel has volunteered to help have small toy parts that people can sand while working in the booth, showing that we do Toys for Tots project every year.
  • Mike Bray carved a wonderful wooden sign with the BAWA logo.

In addition, we will have a small display of past box and 2x4 contests with signage, a photo notebook of members' work, and large signs about our group.

We also needs your items to display. Items can be projects or jigs so please contact Robbie as soon as possible. SEE YOU AT THE SHOW!

This month's presentations

The TechTalk will be given by David Goldenberg who is a young lawyer turned furniture designer. He will discuss what legal type protections may be available to protect your designs. David will cover whether the design of that unique thing you designed and built can be protected by things like patents, copyrights or trademarks etcetera. If so are they really worthwhile given the complication and expense? Seems like something we individually think about but haven't covered in a forum like our club.

The main presentation will be by our own Jamie Buxton on Vacuum Veneering. Jamie will be talking about veneering with a vacuum press. He says, "This talk will cover basic veneering." He is aiming mostly at woodworkers who have not done much veneering, but have been thinking about getting into it (especially since Brian passed out some pieces of veneer!). Jamie claims that veneering is a simple process, and anybody in BAWA can do it. Since it is rather difficult to do a live demo in the Foster City facility Jamie will show slides of the process, and samples of partially assembled panels. He will have examples of the tools and materials he uses. Here is the big bonus: he will also outline a home-brew vacuum press that can be built for about $150.
